Solidaridad, in partnership with Nestlé, Coffee Research Institute (CRI), C. Dorman Limited, Coffee Management Services Ltd, Ecom Agro-industrial Corp. Ltd and, Sustainable Management Services Ltd, Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative Union, Sidama Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative Union and Oromia Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative Union are implementing the Food Security through Improved Resilience of Smallholder Coffee Farmers in Ethiopia and Kenya (“FOSEK”) project, financed by the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The program’s main objective is to improve food and nutrition security in East Africa by increasing local agricultural production and the income of small scale coffee farmers in Kenya and Ethiopia. The program demonstrates improved farmer resilience based upon combining coffee as a cash crop with the production of a considered selection of food crops, intercropped or side cropped with coffee, for farmers’ own consumption and also for sale to the local markets. This will generate a more stable income for coffee farmers throughout the year; contribute to access to improved and nutritious food and availability of food for the local markets. It will also include a dairy enterprise for increased revenues and improved nutrition.

2.0 Context

FOSEK project has diversification by coffee farmers into dairy production as a key intervention in achieving food and nutrition security objective. Towards achieving this objective, significant milestones have been met and includes establishment of 3 dairy hubs each equipped with (Milk cooling tank, stand-by generator, quality control equipment, batch pasteurizer & milk ATMs). This is besides capacity through training to management boards, workers and farmers on various operation areas.

To further enhance and perpetuate sustainability of the interventions delivered and cushion/enhance beneficiaries’ resilience to effectively cope with the challenges posed by changing business environment, the 3 hubs have further been equipped with feed mill/mixer. In particular, the project seeks to enhance the capacity of the dairy hub workers and lead dairy farmers through training on dairy feed formulation and breeding. This will enable them to efficiently run the equipment and effectively change their stocks into improved breeds with optimal production ensuring that the established dairy business cases as diversification measures are more profitable and sustainable.

3.0 Objective

The overall objective of the assignment is to enhance the capacity of dairy hub worker and lead dairy farmers through training on dairy feed formulation and breeding aimed at ensuring the dairy enterprise the coffee farmers have diversified into, operate optimally for sustainable production, earnings and livelihood improvement. Solidaridad seeks to recruit a qualified firm/ consultancy team to facilitate the training of 300 dairy hub workers and lead dairy farmers on dairy feed formulation and breeding (100 beneficiaries at each site).

The training sites will be at the three (3) dairy hubs established in – Karithathi Dairy Hub (Kirinyaga County), Kangunu Dairy Hub (Murang’a County) and Kabunyeria Dairy Hub (Nandi County).

4.0 Expected outputs & Deliverables

The Consultant shall deliver on the following outputs:

a) Develop training aids to assist in the training of dairy hub workers and lead dairy farmers for effective adoption.

b) Develop pre and post training evaluation questionnaires to be used in each training session towards the assessment of the delivery and understanding of the trainees.

c) Design a training program using performance objectives provided as well as additional material contributed by the consultant out of their previous experience in handling similar assignments.

d) Deliver trainings to dairy hub workers and lead dairy farmers in the respective regions mentioned above guided by the training curriculum and materials provided.

e) Link the face-to-face training and mobile extension service provision methodology.

f) Develop and share training reports after every training sessions.

g) The consultant will present the manuscript flow for discussions during the inception meeting.

5.0 Coordination and cooperation

The Consultant undertaking the study will work under the coordination of Solidaridad East and Central Africa through the regional office in Nairobi.

6.0 Inputs

Solidaridad shall provide the consultant with background information on OCCD project as well as the curriculum to be utilized. Solidaridad shall introduce the consultant to the relevant Program team for preparatory planning. It will be the responsibility of the consultant to make contact with any external relevant organization while keeping Solidaridad in correspondence. The consultant shall refer and adhere to statutory regulations of Kenya Dairy Board as well as the Kenya Veterinary Policy. Solidaridad in consultation with programme partners undertakes to mobilize and avail trainees for the particular exercise as per the schedule shared by the consultant and agreed with Solidaridad.

7.0 Experts/Consultant’s

Expression of interests (EOIs) must include:

• A profile of the firm/consultancy team

• Firm/consultants statement on the interpretation of the TOR

• Curriculum vitae’s of consultant/firm outlining qualifications and demonstrable experience in training on dairy feed formulation and breeding spanning not less than three (3) years’

• A description of the methodology

• At least three (3) references of similar assignments undertaken in the last three (3) years

• Sample of previous works delivered, including but not limited to, reports, presentations, training modules

• A detailed financial proposal (inclusive of relevant taxes) and a work plan for carrying out the assignment

The full EOI should be a maximum of 15 pages.

8.0 Duration

This assignment is expected to be carried out for a period not more than 30 days. The final report will be submitted by 31st March 2021.
