Head of Digital Innovation and Business Development at Nation Media Group

The Nation Media Group (NMG) founded by His Highness the Aga Khan in 1959 has become the largest independent media house in East and Central Africa. It has been quoted on the Nairobi Stock Exchange since the early 1970s. As the leading multi-media house in the East African region, it has print as well as electronic media and the Internet which attracts a regular readership quite unparalleled in the region.

Job Purpose

This role reports to the Group CEO and will lead the digital transformation agenda of the company and champion new growth initiatives leveraging on innovation.

Key responsibilities:

  • Drive self-disruption of existing businesses to ensure that the company continuously   creates new revenue streams to guarantee long term sustainability;
  • Promote the adoption and utilization of digital technologies and tools to drive continuous customer acquisition and operational efficiency to support commercialisation;
  • Drive collaboration across the organization for development and scaling up of new businesses to create alternative and/or incremental revenue streams;
  • Provide market intelligence on competition and monitor developments to spot trends in innovation;
  • Lead the identification of investment opportunities, prospective strategic partnerships, collaborations and mergers and acquisitions;
  • Prepare business cases to support investment in new ventures;
  • Promote and nurture creativity and innovative thinking across all areas of the company;
  • Continuous evaluation of existing and new products to drive improvement;
  • Develop policies to guide strategic collaborations, partnerships, and/or acquisitions of business ventures to ensure that all new projects are in line with the company’s mission and consistent with the company’s brand;

Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Attributes

  • A Bachelor’s degree and/or Master’s degree in a relevant field (Engineering, Business, Technology);
  • Demonstrable experience in research and development, project execution and strategy in the digital innovation space;
  • Demonstrable commercial acumen, business knowledge, understanding of a variety of business practices, and familiarity with contemporary digital media organizations;
  • Demonstrated ability of  building  and/or contributing to a dynamic culture of innovation and continuous improvement;
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and ability to persuasively sell ideas;
  • Good understanding of the evolving regulatory environment for set up and operation of business ventures in the digital space.
