The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization. There is growing evidence that investing in the health, education and protection of children not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfill their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries, including Kenya.

UNICEF has developed strategies for strong growth in partnerships and engagement with the private sector across the Eastern and Southern Africa. More recently, the organization wide Business for Results strategy has been initiated, with the Kenya CO being one of the first country offices in the region where this will be operationalised. In line with these strategies, UNICEF engages with the private sector for financial and non-financial contributions to its work for children in Kenya. This includes resource mobilization, tapping into non-financial resources, leveraging business for Child Rights, and establishing high impact partnerships with the private sector.

This TA position is based in Nairobi, as part of the Communication, Advocacy and Partnerships (CAP) team at the UNICEF Kenya country office. Under the leadership of the Chief of CAP, the incumbent will develop and strengthen partnerships with international and regional foundations and business, who can support UNICEF with financial investment, advocacy, and other in-kind resources.

UNICEF is looking for someone with experience of working on private sector partnerships and a strong network of high-level private sector contacts within the business sector in Kenya, which can be leveraged to achieve results for children.

How can you make a difference?

Under the supervision of the Chief of CAP, the incumbent will:

  • Partnerships strategy – support the implementation of a partnerships strategy to support UNICEF Kenya advocacy on key children’s issues, with the aim of influencing policy change, raising public awareness and generating additional funds. This should be in line with the Communication and Advocacy Strategy and office-wide advocacy priorities. A particular focus of this assignment will be on private sector engagement.
  • Initiate new partnerships – support in the development of new country level partnerships, including prospect research, networking, and exploratory meetings with potential major partners, in particular private sector partners, in line with country office advocacy priorities. A strong network of private sector contacts will be required.
  • Manage existing partnerships – manage and develop existing partnerships with business, including cross-sectoral and nutrition-focused partnerships with Safaricom, Unilever Tea Kenya (UTK) and Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), with the goal of expanding and/or renewing the partnerships.
  • Networking – organise meetings and forums with CEOs and other senior business figures, as needed, to discuss priority issues for children. Develop and maintain a contact list of key individuals, groups, organizations and fora whose support can assist in achieving UNICEF Kenya objectives. Develop and adapt materials for use in advocacy interactions, in collaboration with other communication and programme colleagues and sections.
  • Build and strengthen capacity – provide support to businesses and business associations to develop their capacity to protect and promote children’s rights, including through the Child Rights and Business Principles (CRBP) approach.
  • One UN – liase and maintain contact with the UN-wide partnerships platform and advise Chief of CAP and senior management on developments and potential for synergy.
  • Key expected results

  • Private sector partnership strategy implemented, in line with UNICEF Kenya Communication and Advocacy Strategy, office-wide advocacy priorities and organization-wide Business for Results approach.
  • Between 1-3 new partnerships established in Kenya, including with the private sector.
  • Between 3-5 existing partnerships managed and positioned to support Kenya country office advocacy priorities.
  • Meetings organized, as needed, and contact list developed and maintained.
  • Content and relevant support provided to private sector capacity building initiatives, as needed.
  • UNICEF Kenya partnerships work aligned with UN-wide approaches and initiatives.
  • Overall the incumbent will provide technical advice in the country office, leading to:

  • Increased results for children through financial investment and support for advocacy.
  • Strong partner satisfaction, resulting in expanded partnerships.
  • Increased brand recognition through partnership communication strategies.
  • Increased knowledge and expertise to engage effectively with the private sector.

    Education

    A university degree in Business Administration, Social Sciences, Economics, Marketing, Fundraising or other related fields is required. An advanced degree is desirable, or equivalent professional experience.

    Work Experience

    A minimum of 5 five years of relevant work experience in private sector partnerships and fundraising is required, of which a minimum of three years in working with companies and foundations is desired. Experience developing shared-value partnerships also a plus. Work experience within the UN or other international organization is desirable. Experience in both development and humanitarian contexts would be an added advantage.
