Center for Public Health and Development (CPHD) is a non-profit organization from Africa working to improve health systems through training and other innovations in the region.

CPHD combines local capacity with global knowledge to empower public and private health sector workers to improve access to better quality health services for the people they serve. What makes CPHD unique is its insight and capacity. It brings together local experts from clinical, public health and technical fields who best understand the problems on the ground and international partners, who bring in the global perspective and resources. Together, they design and implement solutions that are appropriate and sustainable. Today, CPHD is leading a number of innovative projects in the region that seek to fast-track attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

Position Objective

Working closely with the Executive team, Senior Management Team and all the relevant stakeholders, the Project Director is expected to successfully ensure effective management of donor funded projects. The role will also deputize the Executive Director

The role requires an experienced and dynamic individual with first hand international development experience, international donor expertise and highly developed writing and communication skills. The role is varied and offers the opportunity to develop internal and country specific donor strategies, engage donor representatives, lead project designs including teaming and support in developing first class proposals and budgets to build internal capacity.

Key Responsibilities

1. Program/Project Development Oversight and Support

· Ensure CPHD programming and investment priorities are implemented by maintaining and oversight of all current programmes and projects

· Support in proposal designing and writing and coordinating relevant teams and consultants during this process

· Ensure that all donor projects are managed strictly according to donor contracts and requirements

· Identify new donors or stakeholders whose goals are aligned in CPHDs future

· Actively lead the development of high caliber proposals , ensuring they are in harmony with CPHD strategic plans and within the agenda of health systems strengthening

· Oversee and ensure the professional and efficient roll out and implementation of donor funded projects ensuring compliance with donor guidelines

· Review and ensure that all donor reports are of highest standard and that they are submitted on time

· Ensure highest quality of service/ activity levels of all funded projects

· Ensure the project teams are highly motivated and well supported


· All existing projects are implemented as per work plans and budgets

· Increased number and value of successful follow on awards made by existing donors

· Increased number and value of successful proposals led by teams and smooth coordination of relevant teams involved in proposal design

· Number of improved or new systems or tools in place that facilitate program management and development efforts

2. Representational

· Develop high level association and maintain ongoing contacts with key stakeholders, partners and international donor community

· Actively represent CPHD in all appropriate stakeholders meetings and conferences

· Manage and close negotiations with key stakeholders


· CPHD representation at all key forums, roundtables and conferences in Kenya and regionally as required

3. Others

· Deputize for CPHD Executive Director in his absence and otherwise as required

· Line management on CPHD project management teams and all relevant consultants

· Play an active role in CPHD senior management team

· Ensure unquestionable levels of integrity are maintained

· Link, train and harmonize different departments of the organization to work efficiently together in order to meet donor requirements and achieve CPHD goals


· Minimum of five years senior management experience

· Minimum of two years management in an international context

· Postgraduate Degree in the relevant field


· Significant programming and business experience in a developing country context

· Significant senior management experience including working with government and institutional donors

· Extensive project cycle management experience

· Significant external relations experience

· Results – based management experience

· Experience in developing and maintaining work relationships with donors, foreign governments and development partners


· Strong relationship management skills and negotiation skills

· Significant experience in securing high value contract from donors including bilateral donors

· Experience in working with the Kenyan government health system

· Proven abilities in working with multiple sectors and stakeholders to achieve programmatic and financial results.

· Knowledge of/experience with programs that are health oriented

· Demonstrated technical management, supervision and leadership experience, especially related to team building and mentoring a diverse and multicultural staff

· Excellent analytical, organizational and creative problem solving thinking skills

· Comfortable working in a fluid and complex environment
